The Retired Fire & Police Association of San Diego was incorporated on April 19, 1948. The goals of our organization
are to:
Advance the social and economic welfare of its members;
Encourage and demonstrate respect for our country and its flag, and to defend the honor of our country and its constitution.
Foster fraternal relationships between members and the department from which they retired;
Represent all members when their rights and welfare are under discussion;
Provide comfort and assistance to members and their families in times of need.
Membership in the Retired Fire and Police Association is open to retired sworn members of San Diego Fire - Rescue, including Lifeguards, and the San Diego Police Departments who retired for service or disability, or those members in the DROP. Only about one-half of those eligible have joined the Association! If you are eligible and have not yet joined, we encourage you to become a member.
As a member of the Association, you have access to the roster of members (listing names, addresses and phone numbers) and four newsletters a year. This web site is kept up to date with the latest information. Additionally, our members are notified via email of upcoming events, important developments regarding their retirement benefits and notifications of retiree member deaths.
Association dues are $24.00 per year, payable at $2.00 each month through payroll deduction. You can fill out an
application from this web site or contact the Secretary for an application form.
A few years ago we formed a committee with the City of San Diego Retired Employees Association (REA), which includes General
Member retirees, and SDCERS. This committee is called the Retiree Issues Task Force (RITF). We have obtained several improvements in benefits for retirees over the years. This includes paid health
care for pre-1980 retirees, an increase in the retiree death benefit from $400 to $2,000, and in 1998 the 75% purchasing power protection agreement, known as the Supplemental COLA, for those who
retired prior to July 1, 1982. On July 1st of 2012 the Supplemental COLA was destined to expire because no new funding to support it had been obtained. The Retired Fire & Police Association led
the efforts, along with support from the REA, to obtain new funding to keep this benefit alive for our older retirees by lobbying the City Council and the Mayor's office. This benefit will be funded
on a "pay-go basis" and is included each year in the Mayor's Annual Budget Proposal. The RFPA monitors this benefit each year at budget time.
